We started this club way back when dot shop was running on Manchester Rd, in 2021. We met in the shop every six weeks to chat and laugh and eat snacks. After we closed our doors in 2023 I had decided that finding a new location for book club was too difficult and we should therefore discontinue. Well - I kept running into you guys out and about and the chat would always come back to - what about book club?

So we began again, January of 2025. It started with Orbital, a gorgeous fictional read written from outer space. We met, for lack of a meeting place and to kick things off in a magical manner, by the side of a lake, for a cold plunge and a hot flask of coffee.

And we have found our feet since then meeting in parks and walks and finally settling into our regular spot in Altrincham, the Hive.

We also have a small contingent who meet online, for a more intimate, quiet, evening chat. I wanted to allow our members the opportunity to join regardless of their location. I know that choosing a book to read can be almost paralysing for some, and having a 6-weekly stunner of a book chosen and assigned - with a deadline to finish it by- really can be quite freeing!

So, that brings me to the book boxes! We do a limited run of book boxes every six weeks. They are around the £20 mark and contain the book and a few other amazing goodies. We met at Everyman in October to chat All My Mothers, and let me just say All My Bookclub Girls loved it. I’d four starr’d it, if I’m honest, but I’m putting it down to finishing it on audio and maybe not giving it enough of my attention. (October is a busy month and I think I had a lot on.) But yeah. If you’re looking for a book club read - or something to reignite your love for reading - this is the one. Everyone loved it.

Next up was our November read, My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. Well. I went away on hols at the end of October, with the family, and my every intention was to settle down with this paperback and consume it. Reader, I kept picking it up and putting it down and reaching for something else. I read Just for Today, by Nell Hudson, cover to cover, finishing the final pages as our plane landed. I enjoyed that. I did not enjoy or even get further than 1/3 the way through My Brilliant Friend. And guess what. Neither did anyone else - bar one - in the group. It was a tough one for all of us, but I was glad to know we’re all on the same page, if you pardon the pun.

I had intended to take the holiday season off but Sara offered up a fave read of hers, Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors, and we all agreed to find a copy in a charity shop/on kindle/wherever we could and meet for a chat in January. Book club, it seems, is now an entity that can survive without my constant leading it forwards.

We met early this year in a very noisy pub on a Friday evening, none of us very well practiced at being out in the world on a weekend. I’ll keep it brief: this book for me is already one of my top reads of the year. I love starting January on a good book. There is a lot to chat about in this book, but it’s also lovely and poetic and full of gorgeous sentences and characters and connections between people. 5 stars. Loved.

And the girls revealed that they have been missing the boxes. So I thought, let’s ease back in.

So here’s the plan. This month, March, we’ve all found copies of The Wedding People by Alison Espach. Have you read it? Are you tempted? Grab a copy (borrow or library or buy from an independent would be my preference!!!!!!) We’re meeting online on March 18th for some discussion, some networking, journalling and reflection on how books have changed our outlook on our lives. Come and join us! I believe books can bring likeminded people together and that, in my opinion, is where the magic happens. Even if you read the book last year. And also, if you’re local, get in touch and I’ll let you know the meetup info.

The next read will be revealed very soon. There will be a limited run of the gorgeous book boxes, containing the book and a couple goodies. With the box comes the info to log into the online call, as well as the meetup info. I hope you can join for this one!

What I’m saying is the reason it feels uncomfortable is usually because it’s new - not because it’s stupid.

Last week was so refreshingly reassuring that book club is THE THING WE NEEDED ALL ALONG. Also, the two different groups are giving me life, as the young kids say.

We met online last week to chat LIARS by Sarah Manguso and if I’m honest I’ve read All Fours and Same As it Ever Was (Claire Lombardo) in a short space of time, so was feeling a little unprepared - purely based on the fact my memory had merged all three books into one! The premise is similar but how they pan out are like three corners of a pirate hat, and if you have read one I’d highly recommend doing the other two, and coming back to me with your chat and thoughts. I’ve not stopped thinking about All Fours, and stalking Miranda July, and periodically myself and my friend text each other HOW DOES SHE WRITE THAT with passages from within the pages, still, can’t stop thinking about it. Anyways. Wrong book. But I’m just saying I’m here for the All Fours chat (always.)

Our online LIARS chat turned out to be a beauty this month. We did some light prompted journalling, we read one of Sarah Manguso’s poems and discussed whether falling in love felt like falling through a cloud. (What does it feel like? Fast, and she refers to feeling like you got spider webs in your hair… huh…) We even put our hand to our own very basic version of a poem at the end. It was a really gorgeous evening and I’d love to shape this online group further into something that follows this sort of format. SO back to Liars. This was a book that was one good sentence after another. No chapters, and our protagonist’s child had no name. These were good starters for chat but to be honest there was no shortage of reasons to chat with this one…

Our ‘real life’ meetup last night at the hive was wonderful as always - with some new faces - and some new perspectives. The overall opinion was that readers were a little disappointed in our protagonist’s failure to leave! I must say before I picked the book I did read a couple reviews that said the same - so I was expecting this reaction but I wasn’t expecting it to be so popular of an opinion. I was - as someone who really (really) admired Manguso’s ability to save up so much resentment and lay it all out so carefully and concisely in this (we google’d) true life-based ‘fictional’ story, quite taken aback to hear that these women blamed her for not voicing her needs, and rather putting up with so much pain for so long. Did she mean for her readers to become aware of a learned toxic masculine bias and an inclination to victim blame even with the protagonist’s best interests at heart?

Did Manguso fail as a writer, in getting so many readers to despise not only the husband but her as well?

“The reality I wanted didn’t include this event, so I stepped around it and continued on. (Pg 31)” She created some beautiful scenes - this one in particular where the husband brings some delightful mansplaining to a meeting she is holding with - a client if I remember correctly-? We join her, aghast, gobsmacked at his pretentiousness, time and time again.

Despite the nods to antidepressants towards the end and a history of mental illness I found the constantly evolving perspective of the narrator to be exquisitely sharp; she was getting those digs in and let them be accurate AF.

How close to memoir is this book and what will she write next?

Two passages in particular really stuck with me. There is a part where she speaks about the feeling of motherhood being similar to swimming around on the surface:

“I crouched, waiting to feed him or help sharpen a crayon or brush his teeth. That wariness prevented deep immersion in anything else. I couldn’t write, couldn’t even think, for in order to think or write I needed time to fight my natural buoyancy and swim effortfully down to the bottom of the sea, where no light is, where I could live in my mind’s eye, and where nothing mattered except the thought. When I’d had jury duty I’d achieved a sort of euphoria. My phone had died a few hours in, and I’d brought a book. I read until I couldn’t read anymore. I sat and relaxed and waited, alone with my thoughts or chatting with the other serenely bored people. ……..

With the child, I was always ready to be interrupted. I couldn’t swim to the bottom; I couldn’t hear him down there. So I stayed on the surface, doing crossword puzzles, which required full attention and mimicked the sort of mental state I enjoyed on the sea floor. It mimicked that state, but even if I finished a puzzle, the result was worthless. There was no residue, nothing that lasted.” (64-65)

I had never heard this described like this before, this image of never having the full uninterrupted ability to swim to the bottom. I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

The other passage which I just absolutely loved, was this:

“The best part of my life had been this animal intimacy, the secretion of my milk into this body, the teaching how to lift food to the mouth, how to speak, how to show love according to the feeling of love, how to put on a shoe, how to pick up a spoon, how to wipe one’s own tears, how to piss and shit and be clean. Nothing, nothing in the world like that. That absolute authority of which the baby must be convinced in order to feel safe, separate from the mother’s body. The honor the mother must give the baby, when the baby is ready to know that her absolute authority was never real. The careful timing of the revelation that, baby, you are alone, as alone as anything can be. How lucky you were, baby, to have been a baby with its mother. Now you are ready to start living life in the imagination, to start imagining your way back to every good feeling you don’t quite remember from the days of milk.” (117)

Overall I gave this read a strong four stars. As a group I think it averaged 3-4 stars. If you want a rage-filled account of a marriage breaking down in small increments, written in a really matter of fact way, including sentences like “I pitied men for having to stay the same all their lives, for missing out on this consuming rage” (Pg 63) then I’d recommend.

I love it when the seasons change and we basically have more reasons to be cosy and read books.

Some housekeeping, to begin!

We had our Sandwich meetup and it was gorgeous. Looking forward to our next one. We are meeting at The Hive again, and if you’re a speedy reader there is still time to join us. You can grab a pack or read and join online, whichever suits.

I am halfway through and have been highlighting loads of passages. I keep meaning to say, if you are a highlighter of passages, can you be a doll and bring a couple with you to share at the meetup? They work as great prompts for our chats.

We have also had a poll regarding our next book and I have been in contact with our distributors to order the next two reads. They should be with me in time for our next meet so if you’d like to preorder your pack you can here. I had two books to finish first, The Dog of The North by Elizabeth McKenzie (so funny and bonkers wonderful) and How to Solve your Own Murder by Kristen Perrin… I finished the first yesterday and have a couple chapters left of the latter before I can hopefully speed through our book club book ready for our chat on the 12th. Totally doable during half term right?

I also thought we should do a daytime meetup in June, with coffee or wine depending on the weather/time of meet. Hopefully you can join us! We can wander up the canal or lounge on the grass, either way it will be nice to do something a little different to our cold water morning dips.

Speaking of which, we have our second meet approaching fast. This Thursday to be exact! An early morning swim at Pickmere (if you are joining us drop me a whatsapp and I will coordinate our meeting time!) and an evening online meet, on the same day. Both meets last month were so special, our cold swim was beautiful and our evening chat had some lovely thought nuggets to take away and ponder.

How is everyone getting on with Ask Me Again? I’ve found this one a little slow if I’m honest, but I don’t want to give to much away - be good to chat more - I think there are some hidden themes and discussion points. Be lovely if you have some notes or quotes of your own you can bring along to our chat. It’s wonderful having some starting points that aren’t my own :) As always, please don’t feel pressure if you haven’t finished the book. I haven’t finished this one! We would all much much prefer you came along for the chat, than missed it on the account of not doing your homework :)

So next up we have Nikki May’s This Motherless Land. It’s an NPR ‘best book of the year’ and reviews say it’s ‘witty warm and hugely entertaining’… I’ve got high hopes and with a meetup in June we’re looking at a nice summery chat maybe finding ourselves all sat on the grass somewhere together.

I’m not gonna lie I was a little anxious about how they might turn out, whether I’d over prepared or underprepared, etc etc. I was, however, super excited to talk to people about books!!!

In keeping with the theme of the book, I’d proposed a cold water dip to kick off the year of book love, selfishly because I do love swimming and early starts and sunrises. Also, with the book being focused on the earth and everything it has to offer, despite my initial concerns being quickly quashed when numerous people decided to join this session, we were all -on the day - pleasantly in awe of how we’d picked such a perfect morning for such an activity. Thursday’s weather report: wall to wall sunshine.

We met in the dark, and immediately slipped into chat as the path lead us quietly, through the park, to our dipping spot. We huddled together by the waterside, and just as the sun started creating gorgeous pink and orange hues on the sky, we looked out across the water and I shared this quote, the one quote that really stuck with me, from the book:

“The earth, from here, is like heaven. It flows with colour. A burst of hopeful colour. When we’re on that planet we look up and think heaven is elsewhere, but here is what the astronauts and cosmonauts sometimes think: maybe all of us born to it have already died and are in an afterlife. If we must go to an improbable, hard-to-believe-in place when we die, that glassy, distant orb with its beautiful lonely light shows could well be it.” (Pg 9)

Coats and shoes were shed and we slowly entered the water, everyone going at their own pace, smiles, breathing deeply, absorbing the tingly feeling of the cold reaching our bodies. A cormorant dives to the water. Geese chase each other across the lake. The sky stretches out, clear as anything, and aside from the birds and nature, we have the place to ourselves. Pretty magical.

I think about the characters on the space station, how they share a space, confined to the living quarters for months on end. How their careers, the most sought after jobs, have found them there in space, yet they lust for a situation like this:

“Sometimes they wish for a cold stiff wind, blustery rain, autumn leaves, reddened fingers, muddy legs, a curious dog, a startled rabbit, a leaping sudden deer, a puddle in a pothole, soaked feet, a slight hill, a fellow runner, a shaft of sun.” (Pg 11)

(Gah - sentences like this really got me, reading them over and over and over. So beautiful!)

After coming out of the water, alive and fizzing with something almost spiritual that comes from physically being inside nature, we get dressed and dry and the chat about the book flows.

I unscrew the massive flask of hot coffee I’ve brought, and with shaking hands, divvy up the cups, and the different milks, and everyone gathers, inhaling the steamy aroma of the brews. It’s like we’ve warmed up our minds now and any anxieties have totally melted into the waters.

Quick side note here. I think there is an element of guilt that comes with not finishing a book for book club. I remember this from when we did it at dot shop. I’ve been that person, who hasn’t finished the book, and you’re like - everyone’s gonna find out. What I found super humbling, and brought about a huge amount of admiration, were the ladies who turned up, throwing their hat in the ring, having read just half or even a quarter of the book. An opinion and a point of view on something is so so gratefully received, and this is regardless of whether the book has been read. I just love hearing a fresh perspective, a different spin on something.

And there is an element of vulnerability that is brought out in these instances that is so endearing, and really makes me value a person, when they’re willing to show up regardless of these drawbacks, bringing their gorgeous ideas along, to further stretch my mind and question my perhaps boring take on things.

“Anton – quiet, and dry in his humour, sentimental, crying openly at films, at scenes outside the window – Anton the spaceship’s heart. Pietro its mind, Roman (the current commander, dextrous and capable, able to fix anything, control the robotic arm with millimetre precision, wire the most complex circuit board) its hands, Shaun its soul (Shaun there to convince them all that they have souls), Chie (methodical, fair, wise, not-quite definable or pin-downable) its conscience, Nell (with her eight-litre diving lungs) its breath.”

The points that were raised in Orbital in terms of the space station being an entity - having a heart, hands, a soul, a conscience - was something we spoke about. It certainly made me think about our family, and who represented which aspect of its body. We also went on to chat about how much we rely on our community for our mental health - “They’re companions, colleagues, mentors, doctors, dentists, hairdressers.” (pg 18)

On the way home I chat to Alex about how she put the book down, and picked it up, many times during her read of it, and when coming back to it often she wasn’t sure if she’d already read parts, and we discussed how this may be representative of how it might feel in space, sort of deja-vu, sort of floating, and going back to the same place every day. I think about whether this was intentional. And if so, an admirable achievement as a writer, to create this ‘groundhog day’ atmosphere strung out across a whole novel.

The evening session was chill, although we missed a few of you!! (If you didn’t receive an email, please check your junk, for next time. And please let me know!)

There was definitely a divide amongst the group, those who were waiting for something to happen, and those who were happy to float in space.

There were a couple topics which we touched on in the evening session, that I’d love to discuss more. Firstly, Chie’s mother’s death - it was interesting to hear how some readers felt let down by the lack of compassion shown. I wondered whether, from such a distance, one might experience death in an entirely different way, and by representing it in the same way we mourn on earth, that it may be untrue to how one might feel so far removed. How can we know?

We also discussed the typhoon. One of our members loved how it tied our story together. It was almost a character of its own. I was interested in how it brought together the fisherman and the astronaut, two very different men, connected for a moment in time, one not knowing the other is looking down at him from space.

Other mentionables, which were touched on, in no particular order: the litter/debris in space! The fact it takes 3 years to reach Mars! The future of mankind. The ‘calendar year’ - day one being the big bang, etc. The dog in the painting. And this quote:

“He’s never sure if men’s lust for space is curiosity or ingratitude.”

We closed out the evening session with a list of things - below is a prompt I sent out to members, to ponder. The lists Chie writes throughout the book, I thought were super beautiful, poetic explorations of mundane wonders that only earth can offer. I tried, myself, to write a list of unusual things, but for some reason got side tracked and actually wrote a list of surprising things. I surprised myself, I guess.

I knew I wanted to do something book-related and with new people and to make connections but wasn’t entirely sure what to put out there. Anyways, it took about a year for this book club to gain a little traction in my mind, and finally in January I made a spreadsheet of all the books I want to make it through this year. In times of chaos and brain mush, I find that spreadsheets make things make sense. I’m a firm believer that you can solve many problems by going on a run and consulting a spreadsheet.

Anyways. Here we are, we made a start, and we sold out of the first batch of book club boxes!!! I’m so excited that you guys are on board for this journey!!! We are doing this!!!

So. Have you received your box? Have you started? Are you loving it? It really truly fills my heart that you’re here for this. I’ve begun getting some prompts together for our first meetup and I’ll be sending a little email a week prior to both meetups, with physical items you’ll need for the IRL meet, and things to think about for the online meet.

I wanted to hit the ground running for anyone who missed out on the first box, so I’ve gotten box number two lined up ready. The admin part of starting this club has been what’s held me back.

It’s all unknown. How do we do it? What does it look like? Will people want to join? So here are my list of why I want a club, and hopefully by the end of it you will still be here and still interested in being involved.

1. I freaking love new books.

I love introducing people to books. I love receiving books. And my experience running a brick-and-mortar gift shop has given me a little bit of experience with publishers, retail, and where books come from. And what things go nicely with books. That feeling of getting a book in the post, honestly - can you beat that? I want to bring you that, in the post, every 6 weeks. I’m good at that.

2. I’m looking for something meaningful.

I’d like to really chat about a book after finishing it. The bits that moved me, no matter how small. I want to hear someone else’s take on a book. I want someone else to explain what moved them, and why. These are the conversations that make us feel alive, and true, and connected, and in love. This is what I want from this.

3. I like to have meaningful dates in my diary to look forward to.

Shaping up my year to incorporate meetups every 6 weeks which will help me touch base with what I’ve been thinking and experiencing? Having the meetups be on my computer so that I can do them wherever I sit at the time? Chatting with people somewhere else on the globe? Mmmmmm. Yes. Building a community on here so we can keep coming back to those quotes which had us going mmmmm…. yes.

4. Opening up the discussion for in-person meetups, but each time make it invigorating.

I don’t want the run of the mill book club, you know the one that meets in the pub, and there’s more wine than books. I want to feel alive. I want to come away thinking, wow- that was special. Do you? As well as online meets, we’ll do in real-life meets, but more on that to come.

5. I want this to be what you make of it.

How it will work is this. We will read 8 books in 2025. What that looks like, we will find out. To start it off, I have made it easy - a lovely gift box, which you can order, through the post. In time, how you get your books might change. Your membership to the club might change. But let’s get started - because that’s the only way I know how.
